We get this question all the time, “Why do you see children in your office?” It’s a good question, considering a lot of chiropractic offices don’t see kids and it may be something that person has never heard of or seen before. Well, we take pride in being a little different!
So, why do we see children every day in the office? The short answer, because children are struggling with more and more health issues than ever before.
Neurological issues are at an all time high. Currently, it’s estimated that 1/36 children suffer from autism. This is on pace to reach 1/3 by 2035. Depending on who’s doing the math, this represents a 600 – 1,000% increase over the last twenty years. Additionally, almost 10% of children aged 4-17 have been diagnosed with ADHD. On top of that, sensory processing disorder affects 3.4% of preschool and elementary aged children.
Suicide rates have risen by 200% for children aged 10-14 years old. Teenager depression rates have also increased 37%.
Over 8 million children in the U.S. alone are on psychiatric drugs. Side effects of these drugs include; nausea, constipation, dizziness, hypertension, blurred vision, weight gain, sleep problems, mood swings, loss of appetite, fatigue, headaches, memory impairment, and much more.
Our children have never been more sick than they are today.
Put yourself in the shoes of one of these children. They’re limited in their interactions with other kids, they can’t enjoy play time as much, many of them miss out on playing sports, and they don’t look their parents in the eyes and say, “I love you.” Think about the additional stress this causes in these children’s lives.
Now, put yourself in the shoes of one of those parents. Your child struggles in school because of attention issues, your child is labeled by other parents as a “trouble maker,” your child misses out on playing sports and developing deep relationships with other kids, and your child never looks you in the eyes and says, “I love you.” Think about how much additional stress that causes in those parent’s lives.
This is why we see kids.
These children don’t need more drugs from the outside-in. They need more health from the inside-out.
The nervous system controls every function in the entire body. Thoughts, emotions, digestion, muscle contraction, breathing, and immunity are all controlled by the nerves. Because of the stress in our lives, the spine begins to move improperly. This negatively affects the brain as Nobel Prize winner Roger Sperry found that 90% of stimulation and nutrition to the brain comes from proper movement of the joints in the spine. Because the brain is functioning sub-optimally, the nerves and the rest of the body are functioning at that same capacity as well. This leaves children susceptible to neurological issues like ADD, ADHD and SPD, as well as asthma, allergies and eczema with a less than adequate immune system. Not to mention all of the other health issues that can arise.
The adjustments we provide in the office restore proper motion to the joints of the spine. This positively influences the brain. Therefore, the nerves and the rest of the body begin to have better overall function. Meaning the child is better able to adapt to the stress in their lives, their immune system is strong, and they can begin to have a good quality of life enjoying all the things that children should be able to enjoy.
Plus, kids are just a lot of fun to be around! We love spending time with them and hearing all the awesome stories they tell each time they come into the office. They have amazing imaginations!
